Short answer: most of my couples spread their wedding photography payments over three to twelve months, and the exact number is decided by one thing more than any other — how far out you book. If your wedding is 11 months away, you've got 11 months of runway. If it's eight weeks away, you don't. That's the whole logic. So when someone asks how many months they can split the cost over, I usually ask when the wedding is first.

I've been shooting weddings in Los Angeles for 17 years, and I'll tell you plainly: the money question stops more good couples from booking the right photographer than the work ever does. So let me walk you through exactly how this works, no fine-print games.

The blunt version of how it works

At ConneryFilm we do payment plans two ways, and you pick whichever one fits your head better.

  • Pay monthly through Affirm at checkout. You choose your package, select Affirm, and if you're approved you make monthly payments over a set term. Affirm is the lender, not me — the approval and the terms are between you and them, based on your own situation. I can't promise you'll be approved and I won't pretend to know your rate. What I can tell you is it's fast, it's at the point of booking, and it keeps your savings intact for the honeymoon or the venue.
  • Deposit now, split the balance before the day. This is the old-fashioned way and honestly the one most of my couples use. You put down a deposit to hold the date, then we break the remaining balance into scheduled payments that all land before the wedding. Book 10 months out, and we can spread that balance across most of those 10 months in comfortable chunks.

Both paths get you the same coverage, the same team, the same gallery. More on that in a second, because it matters.

Why the number of months depends on your date

Here's the piece nobody says out loud. A payment plan isn't magic money — it's just your total, cut into slices. The number of slices is capped by the calendar. I generally tell couples to book their photographer 9 to 14 months out in LA, especially for fall and late-spring Saturdays when the good dates in Malibu, Pasadena, and the DTLA rooftops go early. Book in that window and you naturally unlock the longest, gentlest payment runway.

Book late and the same total gets squeezed into fewer months. It's still doable — I've had couples split a balance over two or three months for a wedding that was close — but the per-month amount is bigger simply because there's less time. Affirm's monthly route can sometimes stretch a term beyond your wedding date depending on their terms, which is one reason couples with a short runway lean that way. Either way, the structure is the same: a deposit, then the balance split.

What a deposit actually does

Let me be very clear about this, because it's where couples get hurt. A deposit holds your date. The date is not held until the deposit is paid. Not when you email me saying you love the work. Not when you tell your mom you found your photographer. When the deposit lands.

I've had to tell couples their Saturday was gone because they "were about to send it." It's a rotten conversation and I hate having it. So if you know you want the date, the deposit is the thing that stops someone else from taking it. Deposits in this market typically run 25 to 50 percent to hold the date, and they're generally not refundable — because the second I block your date, I turn away every other couple who wanted it. That's the trade. Once that deposit is in, the rest is just a schedule we build together.

Being on a plan changes nothing about your coverage

This is the part I want tattooed on every couple's brain: choosing a payment plan does not shrink your wedding. Same hours. Same two shooters if your headcount needs them. Same cinematic film. Same editing hands. Same delivery timeline — my galleries come back in four to six weeks whether you paid in one lump or twelve installments.

Nobody on my team even knows how you paid when we show up. Payment structure lives in the office. On the day, you get the full experience. I've heard couples worry that a plan puts them in some "budget tier" — it doesn't exist. There's your package and there's how you spread it out. Two separate things.

And because we run photography and cinematic video under one roof, one team, one contract, one plan covers both. That's a real advantage when you're managing cash flow — you're not juggling a deposit to a photographer in March and a separate deposit to a video company in May. One schedule, one point of contact, one film-and-photo team who've actually worked a wedding day together and aren't tripping over each other during your first look.

Stop feeling weird about spreading the cost

I'll be blunt: spreading payments is normal and smart, and I wish more couples believed that. You are not doing something desperate. You're paying for an entire wedding — venue, catering, flowers, attire, the band — mostly at the same time, and photography plus film often runs $6,000 to $15,000 together in LA. Cutting that into monthly pieces is exactly what a sensible person does with a big expense they saw coming.

Most photographers won't tell you this because they'd rather you just hand over the full amount. I'd rather you keep your emergency fund, book the coverage you actually want, and pay it down over the months you already have before the wedding. That's it. No shame in it. If you want the numbers behind the whole thing, I laid out a full pricing guide and a piece on how to actually afford an LA photographer by paying monthly.

What I'd do if it were my own wedding

If I were the one getting married in LA, here's my play. Book early — 10 to 12 months out — to grab the date and the longest runway. Put down the deposit the day I decide, no dithering. Then set up scheduled payments that finish a couple weeks before the wedding so the last thing on my mind that week is money. If my savings were tight and I'd rather protect them, I'd run the Affirm route at checkout and let the monthly payments ride. Both are honest ways to get the same beautiful gallery and film. Neither one costs you a single frame.

FAQ

What's the maximum number of months I can spread payments over?

For the deposit-and-split route, the practical maximum is however many months sit between booking and your wedding — book 12 months out and you can spread it across most of that year. For Affirm, the term depends on their approval and terms, which can sometimes extend the monthly payments beyond your wedding date.

Does a payment plan cost more than paying all at once?

Splitting a balance into scheduled payments before the wedding doesn't add anything — it's the same total, just in pieces. Affirm is a lender with its own terms, so I can't quote a rate or promise you won't pay a financing cost; that's decided when they review your application. I'm the photographer, not the bank.

Is my date really not held until I pay the deposit?

Correct. I take the first couple who deposits, full stop. Loving the work or planning to book doesn't reserve anything. The deposit does.

Can one plan cover both photography and video?

Yes. Since we shoot photo and cinematic film as one team, a single booking and a single payment schedule covers both — no separate deposits to two different vendors.

Will choosing a plan get me fewer photos or a smaller crew?

No. How you pay is invisible on the wedding day. You get the exact coverage, team, and delivery in your package regardless of the plan.

If you've got a date in mind, tell me what it is and roughly what you're planning, and I'll show you exactly how the months would break down for your wedding — deposit, schedule, the whole picture — with no pressure and no fake deadline.
