The quick version, by tier

  • New or part-time photographers: $100 to $200 per hour. Often two to four hour minimums. Hit or miss on editing, backups and low-light skills.
  • Solid full-time LA professionals: $200 to $400 per hour. This is where most couples book, usually in 6 to 10 hour packages that land between $1,600 and $4,000.
  • In-demand and editorial studios: $400 to $700+ per hour. Think $4,500 to $8,000 for a full day, often with a second shooter included.

For context, the average LA wedding photographer comes in around $3,400 for the day. Divide that by eight hours and you get just over $400 an hour, which lines up with what I see couples actually paying.

Why almost nobody actually charges "per hour"

Here's what most photographers won't say out loud: we don't really price by the hour. We price by the wedding, then list the hours as a way to describe the package. An hour of coverage looks like 60 minutes to you. To me, it's closer to five or six hours of total work.

A typical 8-hour wedding for me looks like this:

  • 8 hours shooting, plus about 1.5 hours of travel and setup around Los Angeles traffic
  • 2 to 3 hours of consultation, timeline planning and a venue walkthrough
  • 4 to 6 hours culling roughly 4,000 raw frames down to 500 to 700 keepers
  • 15 to 25 hours of editing and color work
  • 2 to 3 hours of gallery delivery, backups and client emails

That's 40 to 60 hours for one Saturday, which I go into in more detail in how many hours a wedding really takes. So when a photographer's package works out to $400 an hour of coverage, their real hourly pay is closer to $60 to $80 before insurance, gear, software and taxes. That isn't a complaint. It's why a $150-an-hour quote should make you ask where the missing work went.

Hourly add-ons: where the real per-hour pricing shows up

The one place you'll see a clean hourly rate is overtime. In LA, extra coverage on the day typically runs $200 to $500 an hour, billed in 30 or 60-minute blocks. A second shooter adds $75 to $150 an hour, usually with a four to six hour minimum.

Overtime is where couples get surprised. The most common scenario I see is at a Malibu or Palos Verdes venue. Dinner service runs 40 minutes late, sunset portraits get pushed back, and suddenly the sparkler exit is at 10:45 PM with coverage ending at 10:00. Honestly, I think most couples are better off booking one extra hour up front than paying the on-the-day rate. It's usually cheaper, and nobody is watching the clock during your last dance.

How many hours you actually need

Hourly pricing only matters once you know your hours. For most Los Angeles weddings, the answer is 8 to 10:

  • 2 to 4 hours: courthouse ceremonies, elopements at Griffith Observatory or El Matador Beach, micro weddings under 30 guests.
  • 6 hours: ceremony, portraits and the first part of the reception. You'll miss getting-ready shots or the late-night dance floor.
  • 8 to 10 hours: full coverage from getting ready through the send-off. This is what I recommend for most weddings over 80 guests.
  • 12+ hours or multiple days: Persian, Armenian, Indian and other multi-event celebrations. These need a custom quote, not an hourly calculation.

What my own pricing works out to

Those starting prices are for single-day weddings. Bigger multi-day and multicultural celebrations get a personal quote, because they need more people and more hours.

How to compare hourly quotes without getting burned

When you've got three quotes on the table, turn each one into the same numbers before comparing:

  1. Total price divided by coverage hours. That's your real hourly rate.
  2. Edited photos delivered. 400 to 700 for eight hours is normal. Fewer than 300 is a red flag.
  3. Turnaround time. Four to eight weeks is standard. More than 12 weeks usually means an overloaded editor.
  4. What's missing. Engagement session, second shooter, online gallery, print rights, travel fees inside LA County.
  5. Overtime rate. Ask for it in writing before you sign.

A $175-an-hour quote that delivers 250 photos in 16 weeks isn't cheaper than a $300-an-hour quote that delivers 600 in five. It's just a smaller number on the first page.
